PEER Executive Director Named as a Member of the Mississippi Data Management Working Group
Introduced by Representative Chris Johnson (R-District 87), House Bill 649 was signed into law by Governor Phil Bryant on March 10, 2017. HB 649 creates the Mississippi Data Management Working Group composed of nine members including the PEER Committee Executive Director. The primary purpose of the working group is to research and report on issues related to the quality, utility and accessibility of data maintained by all agencies, boards, commissions, departments and committees of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of Mississippi state government.
In response to the enactment of HB 649, PEER Executive Director James Barber stated:
In an era of data-driven decision-making, it is essential to have confidence that the data collected and maintained by the state is accurate, timely, and meaningful. The ultimate goal of HB 649 is to ensure that accurate, timely, and useful data is stored in locations and formats that are readily accessible for interpretation and analysis in order to inform real-time public policy decisions.
